Turkey suspends 149 referees in major betting scandal

Turkey’s football community is in shock after the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) suspended almost 150 match officials for betting. The federation says it wants to clean up the game and rebuild trust, following what many are calling one of the biggest integrity crises in the sport’s history.

149 referees banned after probe

On 1 November 2025, the Turkish Football Federation said it had suspended 149 referees and assistant referees for betting offences. The decision affects officials working across all tiers of Turkish football, from top-flight matches to local divisions. Each suspension runs between eight and twelve months, based on the severity of each case.

In its statement, the federation said the penalties were “determined by the nature and seriousness of the violations.” It didn’t name the individuals involved or share detailed evidence, saying three other investigations were still in progress.

Investigation finds widespread misconduct

The probe began after unusual betting data raised suspicion among Turkish authorities. That information was shared with the TFF and led to a much deeper investigation.

Speaking to CNN Türk, TFF president Ibrahim Hacıosmanoğlu said that 371 of Turkey’s 571 active referees had opened betting accounts, while 152 were found to have wagered on football matches. “There is a moral crisis in Turkish football,” he said. “The fundamental problem is ethical, not structural.”

His comments sparked widespread debate, with many arguing that the issue runs far deeper than just a few rogue officials.

Mixed reaction from clubs and fans

The suspensions have split opinion across Turkish football. Some clubs praised the federation for finally taking decisive action, calling it a long-overdue clean-up. Others questioned the timing, warning that sidelining so many referees mid-season could throw match scheduling into chaos.

Fans have also been vocal. Many want to know how the situation was allowed to escalate before any action was taken. Local media outlets have raised questions about possible match manipulation, although investigators say there is no evidence of match-fixing so far.

UEFA and FIFA are both keeping an eye on developments, as integrity issues within domestic leagues can carry international implications.

Betting rules and past scandals

Under both FIFA and Turkish regulations, referees are not allowed to bet on any sport. The rule exists to protect impartiality and avoid conflicts of interest. Those caught breaking it can face suspensions or permanent bans, depending on the severity of the offence.

Turkey has dealt with its share of integrity scandals before, including match-fixing cases that damaged the sport’s reputation. However, this is one of the largest disciplinary actions ever taken against referees in the country. Similar incidents have occurred elsewhere in Europe, including Italy and Greece, where investigators uncovered betting activity involving football officials.

Federation promises reforms

In response, the TFF says it will roll out stronger oversight measures and new ethics training for match officials. “We will continue our efforts to create a clean sporting environment,” Hacıosmanoğlu said. “It is vital that the public can trust the officials who run our matches.”

Reports in Turkish media suggest the federation will also introduce tighter financial checks and digital monitoring tools to detect suspicious behaviour early.

What comes next

With around a third of its referee pool now suspended, Turkish football faces a huge logistical challenge. The remaining officials will need to cover more fixtures, and new referees will have to be trained quickly to fill the gaps. Meanwhile, disciplinary hearings are still ongoing, and more bans could follow.

The wider question is how the sport moves forward. The scandal has reignited discussions about referee pay, working conditions, and the pressures that come with officiating in a high-stakes environment. Whether this becomes a genuine turning point or just another headline will depend on what the TFF does next.
