Authorities in Argentina’s Santa Fe province dismantled an unlicensed poker operation following a complaint filed by the provincial lottery regulator, leading to eight arrests.

Police carried out a raid overnight in the city of Santa Fe, Argentina, targeting a property suspected of operating illegal gambling activities. The operation followed a formal complaint submitted by Lotería de Santa Fe after the regulator received an anonymous tip.

According to prosecutors, surveillance identified indicators consistent with unauthorized gambling, including restricted entry, private security at the door and recurring nighttime activity without a valid operating license. A search warrant was subsequently issued by a local judge.

Roberto Olcese, the prosecutor overseeing the case, said authorities found approximately 30 people on site during the raid. Poker tables, cash in pesos and US dollars, chips and mobile phones were seized.

Eight individuals were detained, including the property owner and several staff members allegedly performing operational roles. Prosecutors confirmed they are being charged under Article 301 bis of Argentina’s Penal Code, which criminalizes the operation or commercialization of gambling without legal authorization.

Authorities also seized ARS 8,362,970 (5,976) and $5,401 in cash, nearly 1,000 poker chips, electronic devices and betting records. Small quantities of cocaine and marijuana were reportedly found on the premises and transferred to a specialized narcotics unit for further investigation.

The enforcement action in Santa Fe comes as other Argentine jurisdictions intensify efforts to address gambling risks from both supply and demand angles. 

In Buenos Aires Province, the lottery regulator recently partnered with the Universidad Nacional de La Plata to strengthen youth gambling prevention and awareness programs.

The move reflects a broader nationwide push that combines criminal enforcement against unlicensed venues with institutional prevention strategies targeting younger demographics.
