Danish Financial Action Task Force adds countries to high-risk list

The Danish gambling regulator, Spillemyndigheden, has reminded operators to consider AML risks linked to certain countries under international monitoring.

Key Points

The Danish Financial Action Task Force (FATF) has added a number of countries to the grey list and three to the black list

Operators have been urged by the Danish regulator to factor in the status of countries when considering AML risk assessments

Enhanced due diligence is required where players present higher money-laundering risks

The Danish Gambling Authority has drawn attention to updated lists of high-risk jurisdictions published by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), urging gambling operators to incorporate the changes into their anti-money laundering (AML) risk assessments.

According to the regulator, the FATF’s monitoring framework includes both a “grey list” of jurisdictions under increased monitoring and a “black list” of countries requiring stronger counter-measures.

Countries currently on the grey list include Algeria, Angola, Bolivia, Kenya, Lebanon, Monaco and Venezuela among others, while the black list continues to include Iran, Myanmar and North Korea.

Spillemyndigheden said gambling operators should take the lists into account when evaluating customer risk, as part of their obligations under Denmark’s Anti-Money Laundering Act.

If a player is assessed as presenting a higher risk of money laundering or terrorist financing, operators must apply enhanced customer due diligence measures.

However, the authority clarified that a mere appearance on the FATF list does not necessarily trigger enhanced due diligence requirements.

Instead, operators must conduct broader risk assessments that consider a range of factors, including those outlined in the AML Act.

The reminder forms part of ongoing regulatory efforts to ensure Denmark’s gambling sector remains aligned with international AML standards.
