Veikkaus has reshaped its board of directors to prepare for Finland’s historic transition from a monopoly to a competitive licensing model. The state gambling operator expanded its board to seven members, adding crucial international business and change-management expertise by appointing Janne Rajalahti and Eeva Salonen.
Veikkaus said the revised composition adds international business and change-management experience as the company works toward its 2030 goal of becoming a respected and successful international gambling group.
During the shareholders’ meeting, Kaisa Olkkonen was re-elected as chair and Leena Vainiomäki as vice chair, while Minna Pajumaa, Ossi Lindroos and Charles Cohen continued as board members.
Alongside those returning members, Janne Rajalahti and Eeva Salonen were elected to the board for the first time. Their appointment follows the departure of Katri Harra and Martti Ala-Härkönen, who had stated that they were no longer available for the board.
Veikkaus linked the board changes to its preparation for a licensed market in Finland, where competition is expected to open up. That shift would move the company into a more competitive structure than the monopoly model under which it has long operated.
Kaisa Olkkonen, Chair of the Board at Veikkaus, commented: “We are preparing for the licensing market and the opening of competition in Finland, while advancing our goal of being a respected and successful international gambling group by 2030.
“The board is strengthened by extensive experience from companies operating in international markets and by having navigated demanding periods of change, which well supports Veikkaus’s transformation journey.”
The mandate of the newly elected board runs until the end of the next annual general meeting. Veikkaus did not provide further details in the release on any committee changes or role allocations beyond the chair and vice chair positions.
